What Is an Ah-So Wine Opener and How Do You Use One?

The Secret Weapon for Old Wine Bottles

You've finally cracked open a special bottle — something aged, something with sentimental value. You reach for your corkscrew, and the cork starts to crumble. Disaster.

This is exactly the situation the Ah-So wine opener (also called a two-pronged cork puller or Butler's Thief) was designed for. Instead of piercing the cork with a worm, it slides two thin metal prongs alongside the cork and levers it out intact. No drilling. No crumbling. No cork fragments in your glass.

When Should You Use an Ah-So?

The Ah-So is the right tool when:

  • The cork is old, fragile, or already crumbling at the edges
  • You're opening an aged bottle where you don't want any cork pushed into the wine
  • The cork is very tight and a worm corkscrew would require too much force
  • You're dealing with a synthetic or composite cork that a worm can struggle to grip

For everyday bottles with fresh, firm corks, a waiter's corkscrew is still the faster choice. But every serious wine lover should have an Ah-So in the drawer for those special occasions.

How to Use an Ah-So Wine Opener: Step by Step

Step 1 — Remove the foil

Peel or cut away the foil capsule to fully expose the top of the cork and the bottle rim. You need a clear view of the gap between the cork and glass.

Step 2 — Insert the longer prong first

The two prongs on an Ah-So are slightly different lengths. Press the longer prong into the gap between the cork and the bottle wall, working it down about 1–2 cm with a gentle rocking motion.

Step 3 — Follow with the shorter prong

On the opposite side of the cork, ease the shorter prong into the gap. Continue rocking the handle gently from side to side — like slowly wiggling a key into a stiff lock — to work both prongs down alongside the full length of the cork.

Step 4 — Push down, then pull and twist

Once both prongs are seated alongside the cork, apply gentle downward pressure on the handle to ensure a firm grip, then slowly pull upward while twisting the handle left and right in small alternating movements. The twisting motion is key — it breaks the friction seal that holds the cork in place.

Step 5 — Remove the cork

As the cork rises, maintain the twisting motion until it clears the bottle neck completely. You should have a perfectly intact cork — ready for re-insertion if you want to reseal the bottle.

Common Ah-So Mistakes

  • Pushing too fast — Rushing the prong insertion can push the cork further into the bottle. Go slowly.
  • Skipping the twist — Pulling straight up without twisting rarely works. The rotation is what breaks the seal.
  • Using it on a fresh, firm cork — The Ah-So excels with aged or fragile corks. On a brand-new, very tight cork, a waiter's corkscrew is easier.
